Maureen excelled at sports and was a fan of rough, competitive game. The passion for sports was matched by a naturally gifted talent in performance. That was evident when she received each Feis for drama and theater the Irish had to offer. When she turned 14 years old, she had been accepted at the world-renowned Abbey Theater and pursued her goal of studying classical theater and operatic singing. Charles Laughton was mesmerized after watching the Maureen screen examination. He was captivated by the beautiful eyes she had. Laughton and his partner Erich Pommer changed Maureen FitzSimons' names changed her name to "Maureen O'Hara" which was a shorter name to be used on the marquee. They then cast for her role as an actress in Jamaica Inn, (1939). Maureen FitzSimons' upcoming film (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame - 1939) was scheduled to be shot with RKO Pictures in America under the terms of a contract with Laughton. Her contract with Laughton was acquired by RKO following this film was such a successful. At 19, Maureen had already starred in two major motion films in the company of Laughton.
